Your alarm goes off at 6 a.m. It’s dark, snowing, and freezing outside—but you still have class, practice, work, or a workout to get to. For students who walk, bike, or take public transportation, winter weather can turn a normal day into a difficult one.
Freezing temperatures, strong winds, snow, and rain can leave you cold and uncomfortable. The right clothing, however, can make a major difference.
Instead of wearing several bulky layers, try a three-layer system. Start with a moisture-wicking base layer to keep sweat away from your skin. Add an insulating middle layer, such as fleece, to trap body heat. Finally, wear a weather-resistant jacket to protect yourself from wind, snow, and rain. Don’t forget important items like warm gloves, a hat, thick socks, and waterproof shoes.
Think about your daily routine. You might be biking to an early-morning workout, walking across campus between classes, or waiting outside for the bus. If you’re outside for 30–60 minutes or more, regular clothing may not provide enough protection. Weather-ready clothing can help you stay warm without overheating or feeling restricted.
Don’t let winter decide what you can and can’t do. Being prepared allows you to stay comfortable and focused on your classes, activities, and responsibilities instead of worrying about the cold.
Before the next snowstorm or freezing day arrives, make sure your winter gear is ready.
Dress for the conditions. Stay prepared. Keep moving.
